Design Procedures
This is an introductory class aimed at preparing students with fundamental skills and information that will be necessary for developing visual communications projects. Abstraction, imagery, layout, and sequencing are studied through assignments and critiques. This class fosters conceptualizing abilities in preparation for the more advanced Communications Design curriculum.

Typography I
This class is an introduction to the fundamentals of typography. It gives students an historical background as well as an understanding of current communications applications. There is an emphasis on nomenclature, measuring systems, styles, comping, indicating, and copyfitting techniques. A field trip to a leading output service is included in the course.

Visual Perception
After an introduction of the philosophical and historical perspectives of visual perception, the course develops a conceptual awareness of the organization and perception of two-and three-dimensional design through selected readings. Symbols, archetypes, and the creative process of problem solving are explored as aids in approaching practical and relevant design problems. Technological advances of computer graphics are explored as issues affecting perception. The course includes readings, presentations, discussions, papers, and visiting lecturers.

Electronic Prepress
This course provides students with exposure to advanced concepts and procedures preparing art and designs for professional printing. Topics will include advanced electronic layout, digital color separation, file preparation, color selection and matching, digital proofing and output, and advances in digital print technology. Students will create high quality print pieces for inclusion in their portfolio.
